Craftwork Brewery Tasting and Talk - Fri 23 Oct 2016

Members were very fortunate to share an evening with Lee-Ann and Michael from Craftwork Brewery in Oamaru.

Craftwork is possibly one of New Zealands smallest breweries, but they are making big waves. Recently at the AIBA they won four medals out of four entries (one gold, one silver and two bronze) and even more recently three of their beers were in the top ten rated beers at Beervana session one!

There were 6 beers to try, while Lee-Ann and Michael talked us through their system, the styles of beer they make and their philospohy around how they design those beers which range from traditional saisons through to Sour beers.

Lager Competition Winners - Fri 16 Sept 2016

Another great competition at The Beer Library with a high standard of entries. Thanks to all who came along, great to see some new faces - and special thanks to judges Mike Cheer, Anita Mitchell and Garth Peterson, it was useful to hear your feedback while we were tasting.

People's Choice:

  1. Paul Fraser - Rauchbock - winner of the trophy
  2. Dan Versteeg - Doppelbock
  3. Ross Fitzgerald - Hoppy Pilsner

Judge's Choice:

  1. Kenny Diamond - Munich Dunkel
  2. Dan Versteeg - Doppelbock

Congratulations!

August Case Swap - Fri 16 Aug 2016

Case swaps are a great way to get some feedback from others about your process or a recipe. It also gives you a chance to try some other people's beers while knowing their recipe, which is a good learning process.

Everyone brings along a case of their own beer (usually around a dozen 500ml bottles, depending how many people join), and we all swap one of our own beers with everyone else. So everyone goes home with a mixed case of everyone else's beer to try, then we comment on the beers online.

Thanks to Dean for hosting, some excellent beers in this swap!

Club Brew Day - Fri 31 July 2016

A cruisy day in the sun, with brewing demonstrations on the Grainfather and BIAB systems. Nice to see so many members come along, cheers to Jayden for hosting.

We'll have the two beers that were brewed on the day on tap at the next meetup: Sam Davies Talwar's Champion NZPA recipe, and the Pot Kettle Black clone.

Sensory Training Sessions - 16 & 29 June 2016

We purchased a fault tasting kit from Seibels Institute in Chicago, and deliberately spiked samples of commercial lager with common faults. Each participant received an unspiked "control" beer, and a beer spiked with a fault.

Mike Cheer (Harringtons, Maltkult) gave a detailed explanation of each fault, the different ways it can be perceived, how it is caused, and how to avoid / remedy. Thanks to Space Academy for your hospitality and for hosting the events.

Club Brew Day, Two Thumb Brewery - Sun 1 May 2016

We brewed an 800 litre batch of golden ale at Two Thumb, and members brought their fermenters and took away 20 litres each to ferment at home. We had a competition and tasting event to try the different beers everyone produced.

There was 200 litres leftover, which Two Thumb fermented and put on tap at their cellar door fillery, and at Volstead.

Thanks to Two Thumb for having us, and to iMake for providing the free Mangrove Jacks Yeasts to members.
